Spring has arrived and brings more sun and warmer days. It also brings the final melting of snow and ice and more rain. This is a great time to check out your crawl space to be sure it is in good condition. The proper condition of your crawl space helps prevent water from entering and also preserves your home’s structural integrity.

While you are doing home upkeep for spring, remember the following tips when you examine your crawl space:

Insulation

If your crawl space is correctly insulated and conditioned, your interior floors will retain a consistent temperature. If you choose to insulate, consider using spray foam insulation for your crawl space.

Spray foam is a great choice because it will insulate, seal cracks and close other penetration points — all in one application. If you elect to entirely seal your crawl space (also called a conditioned crawl space) you may add additional storage capacity and increase your home’s square footage.

Cracks

It’s commonplace for cracks to develop in the walls of your crawl space. Your crawl space will be able to resist water penetration and discourage pest infiltration if these cracks are properly sealed. With spray foam, this insulating and air sealing can be completed in one application.

Drainage

If there is a water source near your crawl space you will want to direct the water flow away from your home’s foundation so that it will not infiltrate your crawl space. If you observe that water is pooling around your home, you may want to contact a professional to address the issue by grading the ground around your home.
